In the heart of Samoa, amidst the challenges faced by its vulnerable members, there stood a beacon of hope, a tireless advocate, and a true patriot. Honorable Tuisugaletaua Sofara Avea, affectionately known by his SVSG aiga, as Hon. Tuisuga, epitomized the essence of service and dedication as the Patron of the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG). His recent passing in March 2024 has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him and benefited from his unwavering support.

For sixteen years, Hon. Tuisuga selflessly served as the Patron of SVSG, a role he embraced with humility and fervor. His journey with SVSG began in 2008, during his first term as a Parliamentarian for the Samoa Legislative Assembly. From that moment on, his commitment to the organization's mission to support the abused and marginalized members of the community became an integral part of his life's work.

Hon. Tuisuga's patriotic spirit was evident in his relentless pursuit of resources and support for SVSG's initiatives. Under his guidance, SVSG achieved significant milestones that transformed the landscape of support services for vulnerable populations in Samoa.

One of his notable achievements was securing the first funding support from the government of Samoa in 2010. This funding facilitated the implementation of the 'No to Rape and Indecent Act' national campaign, aimed at addressing the alarming increase in sexual abuse cases involving young girls. Hon. Tuisuga's advocacy and determination paved the way for crucial interventions to combat this societal scourge.

In 2011, his advocacy extended to securing government land at Tuanaimato, enabling the establishment of the first shelter for abused children in Samoa, known as The House of Hope. Through partnerships with organizations like the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia, Hon. Tuisuga's vision of providing refuge and support to vulnerable children became a reality.

Hon. Tuisuga's influence transcended national borders, as demonstrated by his efforts in convening the inaugural SVSG Regional Meeting in 2013. Addressing a global audience of SVSG supporters, he reflected on the organization's humble beginnings and the collective determination that propelled it forward. His words resonated with the attendees, underscoring the power of unity and compassion in effecting meaningful change.

The legacy of Hon. Tuisuga's advocacy extended to education, as evidenced by his instrumental role in establishing the School of Hope in 2013. Through his lobbying efforts, the government of Samoa included the School of Hope in its financing assistance for private and special schools. This ensured sustainable support for the education and empowerment of abused children, laying the foundation for a brighter future.

In his later years, Hon. Tuisuga's focus shifted towards supporting women and children experiencing violence, including initiatives for offender rehabilitation. His compassionate approach, coupled with a firm belief in redemption, inspired both perpetrators and victims to seek a path towards healing and reconciliation.

As the SVSG community mourns the loss of their esteemed Patron, they reflect on the indelible mark he left on their lives and the broader community of Samoa. Hon. Tuisuga's legacy serves as a testament to the power of diligence, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to the service of others.

In the words of Silliniu Lina Chang, SVSG President, "You will be sorely missed Hon. Tuisugaletaua Sofara Avea. Rest well and rest in peace, knowing that you have impacted so many lives of the people of Samoa, as the Patron of the Samoa Victim Support Group." Though he may no longer walk among us, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched and the legacy of compassion and service he leaves behind.
