CENTRAL BANK OF SAMOA INTRODUCES INNOVATIVE POLYMER BANKNOTES
In a groundbreaking move, the Central Bank of Samoa (CBS) has unveiled plans to modernise its currency system by introducing new polymer banknotes. The $5, $10, and $20 Tālā denominations are set to undergo a transformation from traditional cotton-based paper to a more durable and advanced polymer substrate. This development marks a significant step forward for Samoa's currency system.
The upgraded polymer notes will be released in stages, with the $5 Tālā notes scheduled to hit circulation on December 18, 2023, just in time to meet the high demand during the festive season. The $10 and $20 Tālā denominations are expected to be released in the first quarter of 2024. Throughout this transition period, the current paper banknotes will co-circulate with the new polymer ones.
This move follows the success of the Commemorative $10 polymer note introduced in 2019, and CBS has now extended this innovative technology to the $5 and $20 Tālā denominations for the first time. The polymer banknotes boast exceptional longevity and higher quality compared to their paper counterparts, aligning with CBS's commitment to both durability and aesthetics.
The CBS collaborated with De La Rue to design and print the new banknotes on the SAEFGUARD® substrate, enhancing their durability and security. The polymer banknotes incorporate advanced security features, including a transparent window displaying a Teuila flower, UV light-activated GEMINI™ and BLINK™ features, and special printing techniques to deter counterfeit attempts.
In addition to the advanced security features, the new banknotes include a unique polymer feature called Tactile Emboss, which consists of raised dots on each denomination to assist the visually impaired in identifying their notes.
CBS emphasises the importance of handling the new banknotes with care, urging citizens to treat them as symbols of national pride and identity. Proper maintenance, such as avoiding crumpling, folding, or exposing the notes to heat, will ensure their longevity and functionality.
As CBS prepares to launch this polymer upgrade, it reaffirms its dedication to providing secure, high-quality banknotes that not only meet international standards but also represent the spirit and values of Samoa. This move positions Samoa at the forefront of currency innovation and security, setting a new standard in currency performance.
