Hailing from Fasitoo-uta, Dr. Romalani Leofo-Fetuiai's journey reflects the essence of resilience, determination, and the unwavering power of faith. Daughter of Leofo Masiano and Alefa Leofo, Romalani's path to achieving her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Accounting and Auditing from the Australian National University is a remarkable story of overcoming challenges, balancing responsibilities, and staying true to her dreams.

Early Years and Education:

Romalani embarked on her educational journey at Samoa College from 2007 to 2010, where she excelled as the top academic achiever, earning the esteemed title of dux. Subsequently, in the NUS University Preparatory Year in 2011, she once again achieved the title of dux, and this accomplishment earned her a scholarship to the University of Queensland. There, she graduated with honors in Bachelor of Commerce in 2016. Reflecting on her academic pursuits, she shares, "My time at the University of Queensland laid the foundation for my passion for accounting and my desire to make a significant impact in the field."

The Ph.D. Odyssey:

The pursuit of a Ph.D. is never an easy feat, and for Romalani, it involved a demanding juggle between studies, work, motherhood, and family commitments. Recounting her experience, she notes, "It wasn't always smooth sailing, but perseverance and faith kept me going. My support network, including my spiritual mentors, played a crucial role in my journey."

Over the course of 4.5 years, she faced challenges and setbacks, but her unwavering determination, fueled by the prayers of her parents, family, and support network, propelled her forward. Spiritual mentors, including  Rev Uta Muaulu and Feula at EFKS Fasitoouta, and Pastor Matulino and Ruta Siamoa of Faith City Church in Canberra, provided guidance and strength during the turbulent times.

The Culmination: Graduation Day:

On the momentous day of December 14, 2023, in Canberra, Romalani stood tall at the graduation ceremony, officially conferred the Doctor of Philosophy degree. With gratitude in her heart, she expressed, "This achievement is not just mine; it's a testament to the collective support and prayers of my parents, family, and mentors." The moment marked not just an academic accomplishment but a triumph of endurance, perseverance, and faith. "God has been faithful and took care of the rest after I did my part. All glory and honour go back to God because he deserves it all.” Romalani, states. On this notable occasion, Dr. Romalani Leofo-Fetuiai commemorated her fourth anniversary with her husband, amplifying the joy surrounding this significant milestone.

Motivation and Inspiration:

Romalani's motivation to pursue higher education was deeply rooted in honouring her parents' legacy. "My parents were my sole motivation when I first set out to pursue my PhD. Both of them were not fortunate enough to have the opportunity to pursue higher education at the university level due to financial constraints, so I made it my goal to make use of the available scholarship opportunities to pursue the highest level of education that I can" she shares. As she embraced the challenges of her Ph.D. journey, after her first year,  Romalani married and had a little family of her own and they became an additional source of inspiration. "Being a wife and mother fueled my determination to complete my Ph.D. by the age of 30," she adds.

In offering advice to aspiring young individuals, Dr. Romalani Leofo-Fetuiai emphasises the importance of personal effort and faith. "If you are motivated enough to put the work in, you can achieve anything in life that you set your mind to. Put in the hard yards yourself, and you'll be amazed at how much God can do with your end of the bargain," she wisely imparts.
