In the heart of Samoa, amidst the lush landscapes and vibrant culture, lies a tradition woven into the fabric of daily life - fine mat weaving. At the forefront of preserving and revitalizing this age-old practice stands the late Vilealava Vaepae of Lepuiai, Manono, whose legacy continues to inspire and empower women across the islands.

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, it is fitting to pay tribute to Vilealava Vaepae, a master weaver whose dedication and expertise have left an indelible mark on Samoan heritage. Her journey with Women in Business Development Inc (WIBDI) paved the way for a renaissance in fine mat weaving, transcending cultural boundaries and empowering generations to come.

Vilealava’s collaboration with WIBDI sparked a revival in fine mat weaving, as she shared her knowledge and skills with women from all corners of Samoa. Together, they embarked on a journey to preserve and promote this traditional art form, breathing new life into a practice that holds deep cultural significance.

The fruits of their labor culminated in the establishment of the WIBDI Fine Mat Sponsorship Scheme, a pioneering initiative that provides a lifeline to vulnerable families across Samoa. Through this program, weavers are not only compensated for their exquisite craftsmanship but also empowered to generate a sustainable income for themselves and their loved ones.

What sets this program apart is its inclusive nature, reaching out to women from diverse backgrounds and abilities. With Vilealava’s guidance, WIBDI welcomed deaf weavers into the fold, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of economic empowerment and cultural preservation.

Today, the impact of Vilealava’s legacy reverberates across Samoa, with 294 weavers participating in the WIBDI program. Beyond the numbers lie stories of resilience, creativity, and community, as women find strength and purpose in their craft.

As we honor the memory of Vilealava Vaepae on this International Women’s Day, let us celebrate not only her remarkable talent but also her unwavering commitment to empowering women through fine mat weaving. Her legacy serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, lighting the way for future generations to embrace their heritage and shape their own destinies.

In the intricate threads of fine mat weaving, we find a tapestry of tradition, resilience, and empowerment - a testament to the enduring spirit of Samoan women and the legacy of Vilealava Vaepae.
