JAPAN OLYMPICS: MORE THAN JUST SPORT

30 July 2021

Just like Japanese food is more than sushi, the Olympics is more than just sport. In spite if the impact which Covid has dealt to the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Japan has showcased to the world many aspects of its rich culture and traditions.

One example has been presented by the Japanese organisation Oneworld Imagines Inc which has been working to promote the beauty and craftsmanship of the kimono. In doing so, and in keeping with the global unity of the Olympic movement, the organisation has created 196 individual kimonos representing diverse countries participating in Tokyo.

The project involved dyeing craftsmen, weavers and other professionals as well as enlisting the assistance of embassies, schools and others. Each kimono was created for each of the countries participating in the olympics and includes colours designs and themes representative of that country.

According to news reports the goal of the organisation was to promote the idea of mutual respect and of living peacefully together regardless of differences in racial, religious or economic backgrounds.

The results are both stunning and beautiful. While the project may not grab the headlines in the same way as sporting achievements, it proves again the significance and power of art and its importance to us all.
