Media Practitioners Visit J.I.C.A Project Sites

Media practitioners representing various media outlets in Samoa were invited by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (J.I.C.A) on their annual Media Tour whereby they visited and inspected some of the different projects such as the J.P.R.I.S.M 2 Project (Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for the Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries), C.E.P.S.O Phase 2 (Capacity Enhancement Project between Samoa Water Authority and Okinawa), and the J.O.C.V Program (Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

The visitation started with the J.P.R.I.S.M 2 Project at the Tafaigata Landfill which commenced oback in February 2017 and is set to finish by March this year, with Phase 3 set to be implemented later on this year.

The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that solid waste is managed appropriately based on the National Waste Management Strategy. J.I.C.A's counterpart in this project include the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E), Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (S.P.R.E.P), Samoa Recycling and Waste Management Association (S.R.W.M.A), and the Scientific Research Organization of Samoa (S.R.O.S).

Aliimuamua Setoa Apo from M.N.R.E stated during an interview with Eyespy Radio that the J.P.R.I.S.M Project is significant in managing solid wastes in the country. "I'm pleased to say that the project is running smoothly and that we have been able to recycle solid wastes and turn them into sand for gardens and other building use," he said.

After the visitation to the Tafaigata Landfill the second site visited by the Samoan Media and J.I.C.A was the C.E.P.S.O Project at the Fuluasou Water Catchment in Ululoloa. which supplies running clean water for residents in Apia and rural areas. 

The objectives of the project is to strengthen and enhance the capacity for non-revenue water control as well as the internal training system of Samoa Water Authority, which in turns helps strengthen the capacity of S.W.A as a whole to manage and reduce non-revenue water and will contribute to the improvement of water supply services in the country.

Next up was the J.O.C.V Program where volunteers from Japan are assigned to assist various schools in Samoa mainly to teach Mathematics and Science subjects. The Principal of Fagali'i Primary School, Ms. Faasega Sakaria stated that Fagalii Primary School is thankful to J.I.C.A for assisting and allocating volunteers to the school to teach Maths and Science.

"We are grateful for Ms. Nao Hara (Japanese Volunteer) and the ongoing assistance from J.I.C.A who've helped our students and teachers learn more in both Mathematics Science subjects.
