In a keynote address at the opening of National Environment Week 2023, Honourable Minister Toeolesulusulu Cedric Posē Salesa Schuster emphasised the critical importance of environmental conservation, sustainable resource management, and climate resilience. The event, held every two years, seeks to shine a spotlight on environmental challenges, both in Samoa and around the world, while also showcasing the ongoing efforts to protect and preserve our natural resources.

This year's theme, "Louder Actions to Build Back Our Environment and Climate Resilience," serves as a rallying cry for all to come together and take meaningful steps towards environmental protection and resilience against climate change impacts.

Hon. Minister Schuster outlined a series of activities and initiatives that will be undertaken during National Environment Week:

1. National Cleanup Day: A nationwide effort to clean up the environment and raise awareness about waste management.

2. National Tree Planting: Part of the 3 million trees program, this initiative focuses on nature-based solutions for climate resilience, safeguarding watersheds, soils, and native biodiversity.

3. Tsunami Drill: A critical test of the multi-hazard warning system for natural disaster response preparedness in the Apia Urban area.

4. Studies and Reports: Several studies, national assessments, and reports will be launched to guide future planning and implementation.

5. National Consultations: These will be held to revise national policies and legislation regarding land use and management.

6. Youth Engagement: Awareness programs will educate young people about the transition to renewable energy, reducing emissions, and promoting low-energy development.

7. Environmental Forum: Local and regional experts will share their experiences on climate action, biodiversity conservation, and waste management.

8. National Carbon Offset Program: This program focuses on tree planting and a climate sustainable financing mechanism, supported by government employees traveling overseas, with plans to extend it to all incoming passengers to Samoa.

The week will also serve as a platform to consolidate preparations for the upcoming UNFCCC COP 28. It highlights the importance of partnerships with international donors, research institutions, civil society organizations, private sector, and local communities, including schools, churches, and village councils, to address various aspects of environmental management, conservation, disaster preparedness, and climate resilience.

Hon. Minister Schuster reminded the audience that a single week is not enough to underscore the significance of environmental protection. Nevertheless, it serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role that the environment plays in the resilience of both the people and the country, especially in the face of adverse climate change impacts. The address emphasized the interconnectedness of people, nature, and development.

As a nation, Samoa is committed to building resilience and growth while safeguarding the vital services that the environment provides, including fertile soils, clean water, clean air, healthy oceans, and rich biodiversity. The Minister expressed gratitude to development partners, the international donor community, regional agencies, stakeholders, and community and church leaders for their unwavering support in this endeavor.

National Environment Week 2023, under the theme "Louder Actions to Build Back Our Environment and Climate Resilience," has officially been opened, setting the stage for a week of proactive steps and collaborative efforts to protect and preserve our precious natural environment.
