POLICE: SCAMS HAVE BECOME WIDESPREAD DUE TO INTERNET ACCESS
At a Symposium hosted by the University of Auckland, Samoa Police & Cyber Safety Pasifika was represented by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the ICT Division, Laulu Angelo Chan Mow.
The discussion's topic was "Perspectives of phishing for Maori & Pasifika," which was significant because phishing attacks are increasingly more frequent throughout the Pacific as a result of better connectivity and more affordable internet access.
The incidence and effects of phishing attacks on Pasifika communities were discussed by ACEO Laulu, who also emphasized the unique difficulties and vulnerabilities that our communities in the blue Pacific suffer as a result of cultural characteristics and, most crucially, a lack of awareness.
Laulu provided information about initiatives such as Cyber Safety Pasifika, a program led by the Australian Federal Police that aims to educate Pasifika communities on recognizing and preventing being victims of phishing attempts.
The program is also critical for training law enforcement agents to investigate this form of cybercrime.
Sharing expertise and experiences can aid in the development of more effective cyber-security policies and legislation to protect our Blue Pacific communities from cyber threats such as phishing.
