SVSG HELPLINE: A DECADE OF TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) has marked a decade of providing a lifeline to those affected by domestic violence through its Helpline service. During the recent Christmas and New Year holiday period, from December 23, 2023, to January 3, 2024, the SVSG Helpline received nearly 100 calls, shedding light on the evolving nature of community needs and the vital role this service plays.

An analysis of the calls revealed a significant shift in the type of assistance sought. Thirty percent of the calls were related to domestic violence incidents, with victims themselves or concerned parties reaching out for help. What stood out, however, was the remaining 70%—calls from the community seeking counseling and advice on a range of matters. These included challenges arising from the Recognized Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme, village issues like title bestowment, and concerns about violence during the holiday festivities.

The Helpline not only served as a responsive mechanism but also showcased a growing trend—people utilizing the service as a preventative tool. A decade ago, calls were primarily reactive responses to ongoing abuse. Today, SVSG Helpline statistics reveal a community that is increasingly aware of support services and is actively using the Helpline to prevent incidents of violence.

During the holiday season, SVSG's swift response and collaborative efforts with partners, such as the Ministry of Police and National Health Services, played a crucial role. Abused women were relocated to a place of safety, often their own families, while couples worked through their differences. Abused children found refuge under SVSG's shelter care, a testament to the organization's commitment to protecting the vulnerable.

SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang expressed gratitude for the continuous support from sponsors Digicel Samoa and Vodafone Samoa, enabling free access to the Helpline for a decade. This support has empowered individuals to seek assistance during critical moments and has played a pivotal role in preventing violence through informed decision-making.

As we step into 2024, the SVSG Board, the extended SVSG family, and their partners are resolute in their vision. Their commitment to caring for children, supporting victims, and uplifting the vulnerable remains unwavering. The SVSG Helpline stands as a beacon of hope, showcasing the power of community awareness, collaboration, and preventative measures in addressing domestic violence.
