TSUNAMI ALERT LEVELS AND WHAT TO DO
When Samoa was notified about the possibility of a Tsunami approaching
its shores after a 6.9 Magnitude earthquake, a lot of people were confused with the notices that were sent out to the public. Here's a few steps you should take after encountering a
strong earthquake.
Misinformation always existed in the form of rumors, conspiracies
or malicious gossip in all countries around the world.
Samoa has already experienced 5 earthquakes in the past few days , and there has
been word circulating online about people spreading false information.
Some have spread rumors deliberately to deceive the public with misleading
information regarding the past few earthquakes we've experienced.
This can lead to publib being misinformed and can possibly cause them to panic.
There hasn't been a lot of light shone of the differences between the
Alert Notices for Tsunami but the actual understanding is quite
simple.
According to the Samoa Meteorology Office , this is a
breakdown of the altar explanation on three types of Tsunami Alerts.
TSUNAMI WATCH:
A Tsunami has "not been" verified but could exist and maybe as little
as an hour away. Staying alert for more information by the Meteorology
Office is essential to the public , so they can stay informed on
movements they should make.
TSUNAMI ADVISORY:
Tsunami conditions are "expected" in or near the water. The public is
advised to stay out and far away from the beaches and coastline. This
is to avoid any individual from putting themselves in danger as big
waves are expected to go higher and bigger.
TSUNAMI WARNING:
The public is advised to "EVACUATE" immediately and seek high ground
as a strong TSUNAMI will hit and cause widespread damage to lower
surfaces. Following dangerous coastal flooding and powerful currents.
