FOOD MARKET RELOCATE
15 June 2021
The long established food market at the Savalalo Flea Market has been relocated. It's new although temporary location is an extension of the Fugalei Market.
The original food market has fed generations of Samoans over the many years from its original location. It has been resurrected several times following many cyclones and a devastating fire in 2017.
While stallholders were subsequently accommodated in temporary tents many were left vulnerable to the elements. With the lockdown as a consequence of the Covid pandemic and absence of any tourists, the remaining handicraft stallholders struggled.
Many relocated elsewhere or simply closed up completely. Last Saturday saw the closure of the Savalalo Market to all stallholders. The new albeit temporary food market at Fugalei is a drive through arrangement accessing off Savalalo Road.
It is understood that the large and strategically located site will be redeveloped for government offices. Meanwhile landfill operations continue for the new market to be constructed at Sogi
