Seventy parents from seven villages will gather for a Lessons Learnt Event at the TATTE Convention Centre on Friday, 10 February 2023.

The event will bring together ten parents each from the seven villages of Samalaeulu in Savaii, Fasitoo-uta, Toamua, Siumu, Fagalii, Luatuanuu and Solosolo, to share on what they have learnt from the ‘Positive

Discipline Parenting’ modules delivered by SVSG over the 2-year period. The Program is part of SVSG’s child protection programming in Samoa with funding support from UNICEF Pacific.

The Six Modules delivered to the parents were therefore adapted from ‘Save the Children, Fourth Edition of ‘Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting’, and contextualized to suit the Samoan context.

Accorting to the SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang, “The Positive Discipline Parenting modules formed part of the sustained community dialogue with parents as part of SVSG’s preventive and early interventions approach, to allow for a more holistic child protection programming in Samoa.”

“The program did not telling the parents what to do and what not to do, No. The program merely provided information and support that helped parents learn how to discipline their children without violence.”

More than 300 parents from the seven communities have participated in the Positive Discipline Parenting over the last two years, and have learnt together that:

“Positive discipline” is non-violent and respectful of the child as a learner.

“Positive discipline” is an approach to teaching that helps children succeed, gives them information, and supports their growth

SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang acknowledges with gratitude the long-term commitment from UNICEF Pacific in strengthening the child protection system in Samoa, through supporting the work of SVSG.
