The 2023 Rugby World Cup final between the Springboks and the All Blacks was a heart-pounding battle that will be remembered as one of the most epic finals in the sport's history. However, this electrifying clash was not without its share of controversy, with officiating decisions taking center stage and overshadowing the on-field action.

Before the final, only one player had ever received a card in a men's Rugby World Cup final, with All Blacks fullback Ben Smith being shown a yellow card in 2015. In the latest showdown, New Zealand flanker Shannon Frizell became the second player to be sent from the field on the game's biggest stage, receiving a yellow card for a clear-out that led to an injury for South African hooker Bongi Mbonambi. Frizell was back in the game after serving his 10-minute penalty, but the real drama was yet to unfold.

In the 27th minute of the match, All Blacks captain Sam Cane was shown a yellow card for a high tackle on Jesse Kriel. What made this moment truly contentious was the subsequent upgrade of the card to red by the television match official (TMO) due to the perceived high degree of danger and lack of clear and obvious mitigation.

The referee, Wayne Barnes, issued two more yellow cards during the final. South Africa's captain, Siya Kolisi, received one for a high tackle, and Springboks winger Cheslin Kolbe was handed one for an intentional knockdown. These decisions left both teams and fans divided and frustrated, as the game's integrity seemed to hang in the balance.

Former New Zealand fullback Israel Dagg was outspoken in his criticism, expressing his dismay and suggesting that the officials had taken the spotlight away from the players who had worked tirelessly to reach the final. Inconsistencies in card decisions were noted, with some questioning the rationale behind them.

While Sam Cane, the player who received a red card, remained diplomatic and accepting of the decision, the controversy highlighted the need for the game to address certain issues. All Blacks coach Ian Foster indicated that World Rugby might need to consider changes to the TMO process, emphasizing the importance of consistency in officiating.

The 2023 Rugby World Cup final will be remembered for its thrilling gameplay, but it will also be marked by the contentious officiating decisions that left a lasting impression. As the rugby community reflects on this epic encounter, it is clear that there is a growing call for a reevaluation of the rules and processes that govern the game to ensure fairness and transparency in future events.
