Presentation of Annual Government Grant for the following:
(i) Private Sector Organisations (PSOs) Grant
The Government of Samoa continues to reaffirm its commitment on an annual basis to strengthening its Public-Private Partnership through supporting the ongoing development of the Private Sector.
This commitment is presented in the form of a Grant to eligible PSOs to assist with their administrative operations. The Cabinet has therefore approved the allocation of the annual PSO grant for the Financial Year 2022/2023 to ten (10) PSOs for this purpose.
The eligible organisations are those with commercial affiliations and are registered with MCIL under the Incorporated Societies Ordinance 1952. There are set criteria and a number of factors to be considered in determining the amount of grant to be awarded to each organisation. These include the PSO’s list of registered members; submission of strategic plan, annual reports and audited financial statements; active advocacy role; and progress of any development projects being undertaken by the PSO.
On Monday 26th June 2023, the Minister of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour, Hon. Leatinu’u Wayne So’oialo, presented the 10 eligible PSOs with their approved Grants for the FY2022/2023. He also encouraged continuous partnership between the PSOs and the Government whilst acknowledging the contribution of the PSOs to the development of the Private Sector and Samoa’s economy by way of their commercial activities that stimulate employment creation and economic prosperity.
(ii) Workers Associations Grant
This is the second year since the establishment of this Grant with a vision to strengthen worker representation across all sectors of economic activity.
The grant is directed towards workers associations who sit on the Samoa National Tripartite Forum and the Samoa Medical Association.
The Grant is the commitment of the Government to promote the principles of social dialogue and tripartite consultations which requires continued dialogue between the Government, employers and workers to ensure their voices are heard in the development of important labour and employment matters.
The grant started with four (4) associations with total allocation of $20,000 and this year it has increased to five (5) with a total allocation of $25,000.00.
The grant is to support the administrative costs and importantly planning of each association in rolling out their respective programs. Overall the initiative will enable organizations to improve their representation of members’ interests through various platforms.
