Longtime public servant Tuiafelolo Alexander John Stanley has been appointed to head the Office of the Electoral Commission (O.E.C.) as the new Electoral Commissioner.

Cabinet confirmed the appointment of Tuaifelolo according to a statement released by the government on Saturday, 17 December.

He currently serves as Manager of Corporate Governance at the Electric Power Corporation (E.P.C.).

For 30 plus years, Tuiafelolo has served in various capacities in the areas of the Public Service Commission (P.S.C.), National Health Services and the Labor Department.

“He has excellent skills in human resource management as well as in corporate planning, including setting goals and identifying clear and practical activities to achieve the goals,” the statement explains.

“He has a thorough understanding of the Electoral Act 2019 and related legislation, as well as the need for the Office of the Electoral to make independent decisions.”

Tuiafelolo Alexander John Stanley holds a Master in Business Administration in Management and Public Administration, a Diploma in Public Sector Management, and a Diploma in Education.

His appointment as Electoral Commissioner is for five years.

Tuiafelolo replaces the former Electoral Commissioner Faimalomatumua Mathew Lemisio who had oversight of the O.E.C. during the historic 2021 General Election that saw voters install a new government.

Faimalomatumua, an attorney, took up the post of Electoral Commissioner in 2016 and resigned in 2021.

In the interim, Vitilevu SImati was serving as Acting Electoral Commissioner.

Tuiafelolo, the new Electoral Commissioner, co-hosted a press conference for E.P.C. on Friday, a day prior to the announcement about his new role made by Cabinet.

At the Friday press meeting, E.P.C. released the three-day programme for its 50th Anniversary Celebration that was launched on Sunday evening with a prayer service.

E.P.C. 50th Anniversary Celebration continues on Monday and Tuesday with events at the Tui Atua Tupua Tamaese Efi (T.A.T.T.E.) Convention Center.

Tuiafelolo told reporters that E.P.C. has a staff of 311 employees.
