Deaf Association of Samoa Sports Day

There were 35 individuals with hearing impairment from the Deaf Association of Samoa who participated in a sports activity behind the Government Building on Tuesday this week.

They carried out tasks and experiences on building and interacting with one another while executing moral support and team work.

The Deaf Association of Samoa long term partners with a non-profit organisation called Apelu Sports  who took part  in helping and reminding those who participated the importance of moral support and helping one another while executing their task and training activities.

A challenge most people face when working in teams especially when they are in conditions of being physically disabled.

Individuals that participated in the program aged from 18years old upwards. 

Program trainer Anasis Saipele acknowledged and shared how grateful she is with this opportunity that enables their organization to lend a helping hand together with her team. She also extends her thanks to those who participated for a job well and also to the president of the Deaf Association in Samoa Melissa Leota.

"No one gets left behind , and that's exactly what we are here for. To remind each and everyone who were here to feel like they belong and not left behind". she says "Despite whichever sports or athletics or activities they may want to pursue and achieve , no one gets left behind".

One of the Sports activities that was carried out by the programme and played by the participants was volleyball. A challenging one for the players because they were competitive and keen to play.

The President of the Deaf Association Samoa Melissa Leota shared her appreciation on how this initiative is beneficial and helpful to those who are hearing impaired like herself. She acknowledges their partnership with Apelu Sports as they are a huge help.

"I am so grateful and excited for this programme. This has helped a lot for us and those who have a hard time enjoying these sports especially with the conditions they are in. It's a great day with great opportunities and great people". she says

"Despite the difficulties we've faced as a community on discriminating and being excluded on everyday activities. This has definitely helped us a lot. I am very grateful for the Deaf Association of Samoa for their contribution and helping hand for us" she states.

The event is held annually and Apelu Sports have been long term partners with other organisations such as Senese. The aim is to bring people together and make them feel that "no one is left behind".
