Day 9 at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup in Thailand witnessed an electrifying session in the Men’s 102-kg category, leaving spectators in awe with remarkable performances and record-breaking feats. Among the standout athletes, Don Opeloge of Team NBS Samoa Weightlifting seized the spotlight with his extraordinary display of strength and determination.

Opeloge, the 25-year-old Samoan weightlifter, solidified his legacy in the realm of weightlifting by clinching the Silver Medal in the Men’s 102kg event at the ongoing IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket, Thailand. Despite facing stiff competition from world-class opponents, Opeloge demonstrated unparalleled resilience and skill throughout the competition, setting new benchmarks for himself and his nation.

A defining moment arrived when Opeloge shattered both the Commonwealth and Oceania Records with a staggering personal best of 221kg in the Clean and Jerk discipline, propelling him to the top spot in the Jerk session. His journey to the podium was not without hurdles, as he initially faltered with a failed attempt at 215kg but rebounded emphatically to secure victory with his final lift.

Opeloge's silver medal finish also marked a significant milestone for Oceania, as he claimed the 10th qualifying spot overall, the highest achievement by a male lifter from the region across all categories. With a total lift of 170-221-391 in the Men’s 102kg event, Opeloge showcased his relentless pursuit of excellence as he sets his sights on the Paris Olympic Games 2024.

However, the gold medal eluded Opeloge as Liu Huanhua of China dominated the competition, breaking two world records and establishing a commanding lead in the Olympic rankings. Liu's phenomenal performance included a record-breaking lift of 232kg in the Clean and Jerk, further cementing China's dominance in the sport of weightlifting.

Meanwhile, another rising star from Samoa, Maeu Nanai Livi, made his mark on the world stage with a commendable performance in his debut at the IWF World Cup. Despite narrowly missing out on the bronze medal by a mere 1kg in the Men’s 96kg category, Livi showcased his potential with a personal best Jerk of 192kg, currently standing in 4th place.

As the competition continues to unfold in Phuket, Thailand, Don Opeloge's remarkable achievements serve as a source of inspiration for weightlifting enthusiasts worldwide. With the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat intertwined, the stage is set for further displays of strength, determination, and sporting excellence in the remaining events of the IWF World Cup 2024.
