The World Rugby Pacific Challenge got off to a thrilling start as defending champions Fiji Warriors and Japan XV secured victories in the opening round at Apia Park on Wednesday.

Fiji Warriors' Gritty Triumph Over Tonga A

In a match marked by resilience and determination, Fiji Warriors began their title defense campaign with a hard-earned 29-17 victory over Tonga A. Despite facing adversity with the early dismissal of loose-head prop John Muller in the 23rd minute, the Fijians showcased their tenacity by rallying together to secure a bonus-point win.

Tonga A initially took the lead with two penalties and a drop goal from fly-half Patelesio Oneone, but Fiji Warriors responded swiftly with a try from hooker Patemo Nuku. Despite the setback of playing with 14 men, Fiji Warriors seized control of the game with tries from Sakiusa Vosayaco, Nuku's second, Sivaniolo Lumelume, and replacement Aisake Stani. Tonga A fought back valiantly, with 'Ofa Tapueleulu scoring a late consolation try, but it wasn't enough to overcome Fiji's determined performance.

Japan XV's Dominance Against Manuma Samoa

In the other fixture of the day, Japan XV showcased their prowess with a commanding 48-5 victory over hosts Manuma Samoa. The Asian side wasted no time asserting their dominance, with hooker Kenshin Shimzu scoring the opening try within minutes of kick-off.

Although Manuma Samoa responded with a try from inside-centre Afoa Moleli, Japan XV continued to dominate proceedings. Despite being reduced to 14 players following Joseph Silva's yellow card, Manuma Samoa struggled to contain Japan XV's relentless attack. Replacement hooker Kenji Sato led the charge with two second-half tries, supported by scores from Takaya Motohashi, Jingo Takenoshita, Yoshitaka Yazaki, Keito Aoki, and Kotaro Okawa.

Looking Ahead

With the opening round delivering captivating performances and intense battles, all eyes now turn to the upcoming fixtures. Japan XV currently leads the standings with Fiji Warriors closely trailing behind. As anticipation builds for the second round on Monday, April 15th, fans eagerly await the clash between the top two sides, promising another exhilarating chapter in the World Rugby Pacific Challenge.
