The aftermath of the downpour and gusty conditions have left Lelata residents living in the vicinity of the Vaisigano River in distraught as their homes were left damaged.

"The awful weather conditions on Thursday reminded us of Cyclone Evan back in 2012, all our homes were destroyed because of it and even lives were lost," said one resident of Lelata who did not wish to be named.

A long-time resident of Lelata, 43 year old Mr. Isitolo stated when he was approached by Eyespy Radio that he was gutted when he returned home from work on Thursday evening and found his house flooded..

"Even though my home is elevated from the ground by a meter, I was surprised when I arrived home and discovered that water from the river outside managed to reach the inside of my house. However, I am thankful that all of my family members that were at home were safe, " he said.

Another resident, Ms. Leata Faiga, who is also facing the same problem as Mr. Isitolo because of flooding, says that she is tired of this problem because it happens every time there's heavy.

"The river always overflows when it rains heavily, and our homes are always affected because of it. I think the best solution for us is to move away and find some place else that is safe from floods," she said.
