Haylani Kuruppu, first Samoan to compete in Miss Global achieved runner up for the beauty pageant
In a groundbreaking moment at the Miss Global 2023 pageant, Haylani Kuruppu, a children's book author and reigning Miss Samoa 2022, etched her name in history by securing the coveted first runner-up position. The night was a culmination of perseverance and dedication as Kuruppu navigated through various rounds, emerging as a prominent contender on the global stage.
The journey began with Kuruppu's selection in the Top 20, followed by progression to the Top 12 and Top 5, where she stood side by side with Miss Puerto Rico, eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winner. Throughout the competition, Kuruppu consistently championed themes of women's empowerment, placing Samoa prominently on the global map, and serving as an inspiration for future Miss Global Samoa contestants.
"I'm the first, but I do not wish to be the last," Kuruppu declared, urging continued participation from Samoa in the prestigious pageant. Her reign as Miss Samoa 2022 had already set remarkable milestones, with Kuruppu becoming the first Miss Samoa to publish a book during her tenure. The children's book, titled "Haylanni: the Journey to Miss Samoa," aimed at inspiring young minds, received support from Samoa Stationery and Books.
As a social worker, fitness trainer, and aspiring basketball representative for Samoa, Kuruppu's diverse talents and pursuits showcased her multifaceted approach to life. Currently studying physiotherapy at the Australian Catholic University, she embodies the spirit of a modern, empowered woman.
In preparation for the Miss Global 2023 pageant, Vodafone Samoa played a pivotal role by arranging a two-week overseas training for Kuruppu in Asia. Vodafone Chief Executive Rana Bose, a key supporter of her journey, flew to Vietnam to attend the pageant final, emphasizing the importance of Kuruppu's representation for Samoa.
