INFLATION REPORT BY BUREAU OF STATISTICS

A contrast in the cost- of living for this year's month of September
compared with September 2021 has risen to 15.3 % and 0.2% increase
compared to August this year. The report by the Samoa Bureau of
Statistic's site on their analysis called The Consumer Price Index
(C.P.I) measures the concerning rate of inflation in Samoa.

Within the report several imported goods and consumption products have
risen in prices , mainly influenced by the increase in Imported Goods
component of 21.0% from the same month last year. Some of the stocks
affected by this are fuel, imported food, building materials,
toiletries, washing soap and mosquito repellent products.

The Local goods component also contributed to the increase when it
went up by 9.1% on a year on-year (y-o-y) basis, due to higher prices
for local food and meals, phone calls, internet and airline fares the
list goes on.

The report also reveals that food and non-alcoholic beverages was the
biggest jump to the 15.3 per cent rise for September 2022, with a 9.9
percentage-points contributed to the overall increase in September
2022.

risen to a 1.7%. The latest data showed that there were increases
across the board for the communication index last month September this
year.

Analysing the report , food and non-alcoholic beverages are up by 23.4
% and transport is up to 21.6%. The average inflation for the year
ended in September 2022 and was 11.0% while the Consumer Price Index
rose at 0.2% from August this year.

"The most significant drivers of this within the group were taamu and
cooking oil which more than doubled their prices in September 2021,"
states the report.

Some of the goods and products that are contributing to the increase
are chicken leg quarter rising 41.6 per cent, the taro's up 60.3% ,
fish 36.9% turkey wing @37.6% ripe banana or (fa'i pula at 45.8% while
green banana 52.5%.

In terms of transportation, petrol has risen up to 31.2 % the airline
fares at 71.4% and 52.6% for communication also contributed 1.4
percentage points due to the increase in internet and mobile phone
calling per minute.
