Wayne Barnes, one of the most respected rugby referees in the world, has officially retired from his role following an illustrious career that spanned nearly three decades. Barnes made the announcement after officiating 111 Tests, with his final match being the World Cup final showdown between South Africa and New Zealand.

At the age of 44, Barnes decided it was the right time to hang up his whistle, citing the desire to spend more time with his family. His journey began in his teenage years, and over the years, he ascended to become one of the most well-known figures in rugby refereeing.

Barnes leaves behind an impressive legacy, having presided over five Rugby World Cups and 26 Six Nations matches. He also made a commitment to continue supporting fellow officials against the onslaught of online abuse and threats, a significant issue that has plagued the sport in recent years.

In his social media statement, Barnes reflected on the incredible experiences he had over two decades, being at the center of some of the most memorable rugby matches in history. His last assignment, the Rugby World Cup final between the formidable All Blacks and the Springboks, was a fitting culmination of his career. Barnes mentioned that the decision to retire came from a deep conviction that it was the right moment for him and his family.

Barnes' announcement drew praise and congratulations from pundits, fans, colleagues, and players alike. Nigel Owens, another highly regarded former referee, congratulated Barnes and welcomed him to the "ex-referee club." Barnes had broken many of Owens' records, highlighting his remarkable career.

Colleagues of Barnes described him as an inspiration, lauding his unparalleled work ethic and dedication to the sport. Luke Pearce, Christophe Ridley, and Karl Dickson all paid tribute to Barnes, emphasizing his impact on the game.

Joel Jutge, the High-Performance 15s Match Officials Manager at World Rugby, commended Barnes for his exceptional ability to understand the game and his unwavering passion, professionalism, and dedication.

Barnes' retirement statement also contained a promise to advocate for referees and their families, especially in light of the increasing online abuse and threats that have become a disturbing trend in the world of rugby. Many figures in the rugby community expressed their support for his decision to continue advocating for referees, and the consensus is that Wayne Barnes will be remembered as one of the greatest rugby referees of all time. His legacy, both on and off the field, will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on the sport.
