In an exciting development for the residents of Samoa and American Samoa, a 7-Day Entry Permit Program has been initiated to facilitate inter-island travel. This program, also known as the "OK to Board" permit, will enable citizens from both regions to visit one another more easily. The process is currently underway, awaiting formal endorsements from the respective leaders of these island nations.

The American Samoa Department of Legal Affairs and the territorial Attorney Generals' Office recently declared their intention to proceed with the Pilot 7-Day Entry Permit Program for Samoan citizens, which came into effect today. In response, Samoa has reciprocated by agreeing to a similar arrangement for American Samoan Nationals visiting Samoa.

For this program to move forward, the Fiame Naomi Administration recommended, during the 4th round of the Atoa o Samoa Executive Meeting, the secondment of an Immigration Senior Official from American Samoa to the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (M.P.M.C.) in Samoa. This official will be responsible for processing the "OK to Board" permit applications and issuance.

Key requirements for the 7-Day Entry Permit Waiver Program for Samoa citizens include a valid passport or document of identity, a confirmed roundtrip ticket, a confirmed hotel booking or host arrangement, adherence to the law, payment of a non-refundable $10 USD fee, and submitting an application at least three business days prior to the intended travel date. The program will allow for 400 approvals per month, and local residents can conveniently apply online.

It's important to note that this program does not extend to travellers boarding fishing vessels or other commercial vessels.

This initiative has been the subject of discussions between the leaders of Samoa and American Samoa during the Atoa o Samoa Executive Meetings over the past two years. The implementation of this program signifies a significant step forward in enhancing travel and cultural exchanges between these neighbouring island communities.

The 7-Day Entry Permit Program promises to strengthen the ties and promote cross-cultural understanding between Samoa and American Samoa, while simplifying the travel process for the residents of both nations. As the program continues to develop and gain momentum, it will likely contribute to increased tourism, foster economic ties, and deepen the longstanding relationship between these Pacific neighbours.
