Tafua hosts Talomua

The village of Tafua hosted a Talomua on Thursday where farmers had showcased agricultural produce, including fine mats and handicrafts.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (M.A.F.) on Friday, High Chief of Tafua Ulu Iakopo said that the event was organised by the village’s Talomua committee and that all the agricultural produce displayed on Thursday was grown and harvested in the village’s farms.

Mr. Iakopo on behalf of the village requested the government for assistance in providing street lights for the village roads as well as water tanks for their village school.

They had also imposed a fine of $1,000 if a village member sourced agriculture produce for display from outside Tafua.

M.A.F. had provided five hundred seedlings of coconut, vegetables and fruit trees, packets of vegetable seeds as well as some farming tools and equipment for the farmers of Tafua.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa had congratulated the village and had acknowledged the initiative by the Minister of M.A.F. Laauli Leuatea Schmidt in replacing the annual agriculture show with village and district Talomua events, which gives more farmers and fishers the opportunity to participate in Talomua events within their own villages or districts.

In his address on Thursday, Laauli had explained the importance of these events and their contribution to our food security systems

According to the statement, he then encouraged the villagers to invest in raising livestock including chicken, pigs, cattle and sheep.

Laauli had also mentioned the Government’s initiatives and plans to increase our food and nutrition security, import substitution and exports, plus the establishment of a national Export and Import Authority for the benefit of the agriculture and fisheries sector.

He had also revealed in his address on Thursday that their are works to establish a packhouse in Savai’i.
