TEMPORARY FOOD SHORTAGE SPURS PRICE HIKES IN SAMOA

Amidst a recent announcement on social media by Ah Liki Wholesale, a prominent food importer, concerns have arisen regarding a temporary shortage of essential food items. Frozen chicken, sugar, potatoes, onions, and garlic are among the items affected, prompting worry among local residents.

Ah Liki Wholesale cited delays across all shipping lines and encountered mechanical complications during transportation as the primary reasons behind the shortage. While acknowledging the challenges, the company assured stakeholders of their active efforts to collaborate with partners, including shipping lines, to swiftly address the issue. Expressing regret for any inconvenience caused to the local community, they pledged to provide updates as the situation progresses.

However, the shortage's ripple effects are now becoming apparent in the form of price hikes. According to reports circulating on social media, the supply of chicken has been dwindling for almost a month. Supermarkets have consequently adjusted their prices, with chicken now fetching a staggering $10.30 or higher per kilogram, significantly higher than its pre-shortage price of $5.90 per kilogram.

Despite existing price control measures, retail prices for chicken now exceed regulated rates. According to the price control order, a box of chicken legs (15kg) should wholesale at SAT99.30 in Upolu and SAT104.50 in Savai'i. However, supermarkets are now charging SAT10.30 per kilogram in both regions.

This price surge is not limited to supermarkets; fast-food outlets are also feeling the pinch and have adjusted their prices accordingly. As the cost of essential food items continues to rise, concerns over affordability for consumers mount.

While Ah Liki Wholesale endeavors to resolve the supply issue promptly, stakeholders and consumers eagerly await further updates, hoping for a swift resolution to Samoa's food supply chain challenges.
