URGENT HEALTH ADVISORY: COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOTS AND PREVENTATIVE MEASURES AMID RISING INFECTIONS
In light of a recent surge in COVID-19 infections, both locally and globally, the Ministry of Health urges communities to take immediate precautions to protect themselves and curb the spread of the virus. New Zealand has just encountered its fifth wave of infections, while high infection rates persist in certain areas of the United States. Considering the daily flights connecting these countries, heightened vigilance and proactive measures are essential.
One concerning factor contributing to the vulnerability of the population is the observed waning immunity among individuals vaccinated in 2021 and 2022. To address this, the Ministry of Health recommends the following actions:
1. COVID-19 Vaccination:
- Single Dose: Individuals who have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine are strongly encouraged to get their first dose.
- Booster Dose: For those vaccinated more than 12 months ago, especially prioritising:
- Front-line workers (health and first responders).
- Individuals aged 60 and above.
- Those with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, or lung disease.
- Pregnant mothers.
Ensure you bring your COVID-19 Vaccination card for record-keeping. Boosters are available at the Expanded Program on Immunisation (EPI) Building, Moto’otua, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4:00 pm. Additional sites may be announced.
2. General Public Advisory:
- Adherence to all COVID-19 prevention measures is crucial.
- These measures also aid in preventing the spread of the flu.
- Maintain a minimum 1-meter distance from others.
- Wear a mask, particularly in places where distancing is challenging.
- Ventilate closed, crowded, and close-contact spaces by opening windows.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Practice regular hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizers.
- Stay at home if unwell; seek advice from Public Health by calling 66666 or 66695.
3. Dual Threat: COVID-19 and the Flu:
- It's imperative to recognize the possibility of contracting both illnesses simultaneously.
- Symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle ache, sneezing, and coughing, are common to both.
- Both viruses spread similarly, primarily through inhaling droplets from coughs or sneezes.
- Notably, COVID-19 may include a loss of smell and taste, especially in younger individuals.
- Some COVID-19 carriers may remain asymptomatic, emphasising the importance of precaution.
4. Flu Vaccination:
- Emphasising that flu vaccinations are also available and can be administered alongside COVID-19 booster doses.
