Non-profit Organisation Helping Hands has assisted 1340 families with cash power assistance during lockdown.

Helping Hands is a group of volunteers that was formed to help the community and families affected by the measles epidemic in 2019 and have continued to assist communities.

A spokesperson of the organisation told Eyespy Radio on Wednesday that the motivation behind the Helping Hands is always to provide service where they can.

"Our mission statement is- To serve, assist and provide relief aid to individuals and families of Samoa who are affected by diseases, natural disasters and poverty," the spokesperson told Eyespy Radio on Wednesday.

"We wanted to find a way we could help as many people as we could whilst adhering to the SOE requirements and furthermore keep our volunteers safe. So we needed a contactless way of giving help. After some brainstorming, the team came up with the solution of cash power. We figured everyone needed electricity and this way, even if for a short period of time, families could use money on other necessity items."

According to the spokesperson, they have assisted 1340 families with cash power assistance of $30 each which brings the total to $40,200 tala.

"We have roughly one more list of 200 Pax to send out next week and that will end the assistance for cash power as the lockdown has been lifted," the spokesperson said.

"Once this list has been sent out, the Helping Hands organization would have assisted over 1500 families and spent $46,200 tala.

"All made possible by the kind donors all around the world that have trusted us to be their hands and feet to serve the people of Samoa during these difficult times."

Helping Hands plans on continuing their assistance.

"Once the lockdown has been lifted the assistance will halt for this particular service and we will look into other ways to help or plan and prepare for what is to come in the future," the spokesperon said.

"As mentioned above our efforts are only made possible by the many Helping Hands around the world that have made donations to our organization and without them this would not be possible. We will continue to strive to find ways to help the people of Samoa.

"We are very grateful for the team at Myna’s Supermarket for putting up their hand to assist us after hours in loading and sending out hundreds of power vouchers at a time. They have been very accommodating with our requests and do so as a service so thank you Myna’s for your Helping Hands!

"We are all in need of a helping hand at some point of our lives so please, reach out and help your neighbor. A good deed will never go unseen and if we can all be of some service to each other then we will be able to get through these trying times together."
