MOANA PASIFIKA SIGNS MANU SAMOA PROP, JAMES LAY

New Addition to the Moana Pasifika forward squad, James Lay

Moana Pasifika, the Pacific Islands' rugby team, is excited to announce James Lay, an experienced loosehead prop, joining their roster for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. This signing marks an exciting addition to the team's front row and brings a wealth of international and domestic rugby experience.

Lay, a Manu Samoa international, has made a significant impact in New Zealand's Super Rugby competition, having been a mainstay of the Blues since his debut in 2020. With 11 caps for the Blues, he has proven his calibre at the top level of domestic rugby in the country.

His international pedigree is equally impressive, with 18 appearances for the Manu Samoa and representation in two Rugby World Cups. Hailing from the villages of Sasina and Safotu in Samoa, Lay has a deep connection to his homeland and a strong desire to proudly represent his Samoan heritage.

The 29-year-old prop forward began his rugby journey through Auckland's NPC side in 2016. Since then, he has gained valuable experience playing for Bay of Plenty and the Bristol Bears, demonstrating his versatility and adaptability across different rugby codes. Lay's ability to play on both sides of the scrum makes him a versatile and valuable asset.

Despite spending the past season on the sidelines in 2023 due to injury, Lay is renowned for his outstanding scrummaging skills and is considered one of the best in the competition. Standing at 1.78 meters tall and weighing 118kg, his physical presence and skills in the set pieces are a significant asset.

Another exciting aspect of this signing is Lay's previous experience playing under the coaching of Fa’alogo Tana Umaga. This familiarity with Umaga's style and vision is expected to enable Lay to seamlessly integrate into the Moana Pasifika squad and contribute effectively to the team's objectives.

In summary, the addition of James Lay to Moana Pasifika's lineup is a cause for celebration. His international experience, domestic success, versatility, and scrummaging prowess make him a valuable asset to the team. Fans eagerly await his return to the field in 2024, as they anticipate the positive impact he will undoubtedly bring to the Moana Pasifika jersey. Welcome, James!
