Mulifanua and US Embassy cleanup beach and sea-wall for World Ocean Day

The US Embassy Peace Corps Samoa, and the Mulifanua community commemorate World Ocean Day through a beach and sea-wall cleanup.

The beach and sea-wall cleanup was held on Wednesday the 8th of June. Communities had commemorated World Ocean Day this year with the theme Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean.

According to a statement issued by the US Embassy in Samoa, the half-day beach and seawall clean-up activity focused on the Fuailolo’o area.

U.S. Embassy Chargé d‘Affaires Jonathan Lee Yoo said in the statement that they know that when people are protecting oceans, they are protecting the future for generations to come.

“Today’s event is a reminder that collective action is the only way forward,” Mr. Lee Yoo said.

Peace Corps Country Director Gini Wilderson said that Peace Corps Samoa is grateful to Mulifanua for joining them in protecting Samoa’s beaches and shoreline for the safety and enjoyment of all.

“We gathered and properly disposed of more than 30 bags of rubbish, a wonderful effort that was accomplished together,” Ms. Wilderson said.

Mulifanua is one of Peace Corps Samoa’s partner communities and was the host village for pre-service training for the last cohort of Volunteers in 2019.
