In an effort to assist vulnerable families within the community the Ministry of Women, Community & Social Development has begun the distribution of hygiene packages for vulnerable families currently affected by COVID-19.

The Ministry expressed that this initiative was in line with their mandatory focus, and currently prioritizes low-income families that are struggling to support multiple children, a person(s) with a disability, elderly or a loved one infected with COVID-19.

A total of 200 packages containing basic necessities such as; soaps, face masks, sanitizers, water bottles and basic hygiene information/brochures from the Ministry of Health were set aside for distribution in both Upolu and Savaii.

Over the past week over 60 hygiene packages were delivered to selected families in Upolu to villages such as; Falelauniu, Tafaigata, Malie, Leone, Magiagi, Letogo and others, with more packages ready for distribution over the next week.

In Savaii, 100 packages were distributed among 20 districts. These were mostly received by their Members of Parliament or a government representative in the village, with the aim for them to distribute them amongst low-income families.

A statement from the Ministry explained that as families and communities continue to adapt to managing infection and living with COVID-19, households have been placed under stress from everyday economic & social challenges, and are vulnerable to severe health difficulties.

“The Ministry seeks to provide direct support and coordinate with its network of implementing partners and donors to mobilize similar support for vulnerable families across the country.”

It also stated “In such unprecedented times, the Ministry continues to support Government’s collective effort to manage the pandemic and boost the resilience of our communities to the threat of COVID-19.”

In a Press Release dated 6th April, 2022 the Ministry also shared data clarifying the distribution of the Hygiene Packages. These are included below:
