Tapatapao had hosted their first ever talomua on Thursday where farmers of the village and communities witnessed the display of a variety of root crops, vegetables, fruits as well as tilapia and freshwater eels farmed in the nearby freshwater ponds.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (M.A.F.) the village Talomua was organized and coordinated by one of the local farmers of Tapatapao Fausa Sugalu Pasia.

The impacts of COVID-19 had delayed the event which was supposed to take place a few weeks ago.

The village had gifted some of the agricultural produce to Minister of M.A.F. Laauli Leuatea Schmidt while the produce was also donated to the Carmelite Sisters at Vailima and the Little Sisters of the Poor and the elderly at Mapuifagalele at Vailele.

M.A.F. had then provided five hundred seedlings of coconut and fruit trees, packets of vegetable seeds as well as some farming tools and equipment for the farmers of Tapatapao.

Laauli had congratulated those who had organised the event on Thursday and expressed his appreciation of the farmers and fishers’ efforts.

Laauli had then encouraged the village to look into establishing tilapia aquaculture to invest in as one of their future projects under the District Development Funding Scheme, and to request the government for assistance.

According to the statement, the farmers’ representative Fulu Maselina Nauer, relayed their request to the government for assistance in order to improve electricity and phone network coverage for some parts of the village.
