US Embassy to open American Corner in Savaii
The US Embassy Office in Apia has announced that they will open an American Corner for the Salelologa Library in Savaii.
The American Corner is a partnership between the US Embassy office and the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture (M.E.S.C.). The Corner houses a collection of US reference, fiction, non-fiction, children’s and electronic resoiurces for public use. It also provides space for meetings and free educational programmes, and offers computers for the public to use including free internet access.
The announcement was made by US Chargé d’Affaires Jonathan Lee Yoo on Wednesday during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (M.O.U.) between the The US Embassy Office and the Ministry at the Nelson memorial Library.
“I am happy to pubicly announce here [...] of a new American space which will be in Salelologa,” Mr. Lee Yoo said on Wednesday.
“It will be at the library at Salelologa and this took a lot of time and discussion, and consultation with the Ministry last year.
He said that the US Embassy in Apia will be able to approve a grant for USD$21,800 (WST$58,791).
“The official of launch of this space is coming soon,” he said.
Mr. Lee Yoo gave thanks to Education Adviser Veronika Matautia-Mortenson, and the American Corner staff at the Nelson Memorial Library for their support, and had given thanks to M.E.S.C. for the partnership.
“Thank you again for your partnership and we look forward to empowering the next generation of Samoans to realise their full potential and their dreams,” he said.
