Ladies and Gentlemen

1. Greetings and Talofa Lava. It gives me great pleasure to be here and I am honored to deliver the keynote address for this auspicious occasion.

2. At the outset, I would like to acknowledge with much appreciation the continuous partnership between the government and our communities including our schools. This morning we are witnessing yet another great milestone which speaks to the genuine spirit of collaboration between the government and our local communities as we celebrate the official launching of the Papauta Girls College Community Biogas Project.

3. The newly installed biogas system will make use of waste from the washroom facilities and latrines, piggery, cattle and food scraps to generate biogas for cooking and lighting purposes and will have multiple benefits for the school such as:

• Improved on-site waste management technology.

• Cost efficient i.e. reducing expenses on LPG gas bottles;

• Create employment opportunities for locals to collect waste to feed the digester;

• Increased educational and awareness of renewable energy technology and benefits; and

• And more importantly, this renewable energy technology will assist in reducing greenhouse gas emmissions as part of Samoa’s onverall contribution to global climate change initiatives.

4. The Community Biogas System for Papauta Girls College was constructed by Bio- Energy Solution Technology Limited (BEST),with an estimated total cost of $100,000Talā. This development was funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP); and co-financed by the Government of Samoa (GoS).

5. I wish to take this opportunity to convey our sincere appreciation to our development partners, GEF and UNDP not forgetting our national and local stakeholders for your support and contribtuions in making this project a reality. I am confident that with your continuing support, Samoa will continue to make strides in providing clean energy and a healthier environment for our people.

6. Last but not least, special thank you to our Papauta Girls College, Principal and students, for your support and contribution to this project. Be proud of this great achievement and we look forward to continuing our close partnership. We wish you all the best.

Thank you,

Soifua ma ia manuia!
